The Avignon
Performing Arts Festival
Last three weeks of July. A yearly event that encompasses all the
performing arts. Each year is marked by a different theme. The central attention is on the
Main Events (aka le "In"), grandiose or extremely high quality international
performance events ranging from Shakespeare and Greek tragedy to French farce (Moliére),
modern dance, and ballet. The bulk of the activity (le "Off") is the mass of
short-run plays numbering in the hundreds which are stuffed into every possible
nook-and-cranny theater, assembly room, and gymnasium that the walled ramparts (and
outside) can hold.
The street performers, buskers, and mimes add a festive, sometimes frantic, note to the
central 3-week period. We sample together, and discuss at night, reading the reviews and
deciding where to spend our theater budget. The "In" events are expensive, the
"Off" events can be very reasonable (eg, 10F). Our information about the
Festival requires sending you a special pamphlet package (Refundable $10) . Call us if you
are a serious theatre aficionado or francophile interested party.
Guests during this period can have loads of fun poking in and out of these activities, for
no more time wasted than walking up the street 10 minutes, and the cost of a generous tip
in the collective hat. Some of these events are unforgettable, clever, and full of the
kind of pathos and inflection that only an artist culture like France can sustain.
